I wipe everything down, use a generous amount of lubricant, reassemble carefully, and the tighten to 150 in/lbs. Just went and bought a deep socket that will do the job and it seems I was over tightening it. WebJun 20, 2024 · The drain plug on my Hayward sand filter was leaking. Teflon tape and plumbers dope wouldn't fix it. The solution was to epoxy a 1" threaded female coupler and then use a 1" plug. Everything was available at LowesDepot for less than $10. It was a fairly easy fix once I figured out what to do. Then with a rag around the cap, tightened it 1/4 turn clockwise. The leak stopped. Seems the PB installed it and did not tighten enough. I phoned them and they said indeed those drain caps on the bottom of the sand filters need to be tightened a bit more with a clamp.
