WebAfter the chip, there's an analog output stage that makes more difference than the chip itself. The power supply also matters. For the most part, spending more money will get you better performance, regardless of the chip utilized. A $500 DAC will usually sound better than a $100 DAC. That's just how life is.

The AKM is second behind the ESS in treble emphasis, and both perceptually shift room noise/air toward piercing whines and hissy artifacts.
